Gregor’s Room

“A visual response to the short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.
White Copy Paper, Ink, Coffee (No Adhesives)
10” x 7” x 4”

Artist Statement
The sculpture collection reflects my perception of the story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.” Witchin the story there were references toward struggle, denial, and imprisonment. All of which contribute to the idea of a cramped messy space that its heavy and suffocating, but yet has a residue of comfort. The protagonist, Gregor, is seen as a weak and resilient individual, as he is unable to stand but continues to try until he ends in defeat. Due to this, there are fading stained furniture, that had once had vibrant colors. There are burns on the blankets to show the weight they had on him and how suffocating they could be. Gregor is represented as an abstract of a tee shirt in the dirty pile of clothes, as that is the imagery puled from a closed off mess of a room.

Trinity

Gray Air Dry Clay, Red Air Dry Clay, Wood, Acrylic Paint

Front - 5x5x4

This sculpture was created with a bond between two people, as an activism piece to raise awareness to mental health of the survivors left behind when someone falls victim to suicide. The front sculpture was created with a “gun shot” wound to the head and butterflies coming from the exiting side to show the soul of the individual leaving the body. The base for this sculpture is a wooden circle that is burned to symbolize a period(.) as the end of life. The back sculpture

Dinner and a movie

Frankenstein
Various Objects and Materials
Inspired by: Big Daddy (1999)

This piece is a generational pull from a parent to a child about the “need” to grow up. This piece goes further into the relationship of of a father and son, this dynamic is how kids from split house holds spend their time with “dad”. The take out food and ketchup speaks to dad being fun/not knowing how to cook/easy food options. The newspaper hold many meanings to it, the business section was highlighted to the maturity and the funny pages and sports for the immature sides of this characters. There are also two different types of sticks, two from the same tree and one from another. Two from the same tree are to show the bond and relationship between them. The sticks have another connotation of being out in nature and free while also being the object that will trip you the easiest.

Rage
Photograph

"As meditation techniques and biofeedback have shown, the mind can learn to conquer pain. This is particularly true in moments of crisis or exaltation, when concentrating on something outside oneself seems to distract the mind from the body, and the body from suffering and time."

-Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of The Senses, page 101

Statement:

This image was created to show the raw emotions that come with pain and wanting to scream in order to release those pains. The image is created using multiple shots from the same spot and blended them all together to create motion. This is the sense of touch by experience of pain. we all experience pain and have to learn how to endure and cope with these pains in any time of situation that life gives us.

 Lion

Cardboard and Magazine scraps

 36x24

"One need only watch the body whims of a house cat rubbing and wrapping itself around its owner's leg, or the courting of two giraffes thwacking their long necks together."

-Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of The Senses, page 98

Statement:

This image was created using multiple strips of magazines cut outs to create a silhouette of a lion. This being the top of the animal kingdom and a precious large cat. Like house cats lions are cuddlers and rub their heads up against one another as an affiliative behavior. The Lion is a colorful animal in the sense that it has many caring traits within the pride and can also be a very aggressive animal the reason I chose to show the different attributes to the lion with an array of colors.

ART 21

Elliot Hundley

Diverse - Hundley uses multiple mediums and creates 2-D as well as 3-D sculptures. Hundley is very methodical when he is in process of taking images of his subjects however when he is picking scraps for his collage work, he pulls multiple pieces from an envelope and lets the scraps take him on a journey. I enjoy letting your end point be a mystery and allowing your process take you wherever the medium flows.

Eccentric- Hundleys work is genuinely out of the box, he uses unusual mediums to convey his references of Greek tragedy and classical mythology. His work although unconventional, he has a purpose in his work that can still be conveyed. My perception of his work is in depth research of wanting to discover each detail, and what their meanings were meant to be.

In relation to Elements & Principles Hundley’s work although seeming chaotic is throughly thought out and formed symmetrically with a focal point. He doesn’t have a direction when he begins and allows the art to reach a point as to where is begins to speak to him. For me I see many things within this work, “I’ll get you” for one; is a little horrifying and plays to the negative connotation within the graphics of this piece.this work have the look of a face and sorrow of eyes peering out. To me i feel as though this is the inner voice inside us that is trying to come out and eat at us until we let go or it kills us.

Hundly has many forms of art and uses of medium to create work. The Elements & Principles in this piece is very organic in the way the lines are formed. This work also has use of color to force the eye in certain directions. I can interpret a lot from this work. There is an Japanese influence that i get from this and to me it look as thought there is a great fight happening and we are possible in activism toward saving an oceanic animal. Where we see them suffer and bleed out in the the hopes for survival.
